Gabapentin

Why have I been prescribed Gabapentin?

  • Gabapentin is used to treat some types of persistent pain.
  • It is especially good for nerve pain, such as burning, shooting or stabbing pain.
  • Gabapentin belongs to a group of medicines called anticonvulsants which are also used to treat epilepsy and anxiety.
  • Gabapentin works by changing the way that nerves send messages to your brain.

When should I take it?

  • Normally started on a small dose and will be gradually increased. It is taken between one to three times a day as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Normally a minimum dose of Gabapentin 300mg twice a day is needed to get any benefit and the dose may need to be increased to Gabapentin 1200mg twice a day.
  • Your doctor will advise how much to start taking and when to increase the dose.
  • If you are taking antacid medication, it is best to wait for two hours after taking antacids and before taking Gabapentin.
  • Gabapentin may be taken on an empty or full stomach.

What if I forget or miss a dose?

  • Take it as soon as you remember.
  • Do not take two doses together.

How long will it take to work?

  • Every patient is different. You may notice some initial benefit within a few days, however it may take up to 2 months.
  • You may need to increase the dose for therapeutic benefits.

What are the possible side effects?

  • Generally side effects are more troublesome soon after starting Gabapentin or increasing the dose. It is important to persist as these side effects usually wear off.
  • Common side effects : drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue and muscle tremor.
  • Less common side effects: vision disturbances, indigestion, weight gain, leg swelling, memory loss, mood changes, hallucinations or rash. If any of these side effects occur, contact your doctor for advice.
  • Alcohol increases the sedative effects of gabapentin.

Can I take this medication long-term?

  • Yes, if it helps. You need to review your treatment to check if your pain is still a problem and when to come off the medicines.
